Week ten

Sadly due to extreemley poor weather conditions this weeks session had to be cancled, however i can say that this weeks session was going to be based around a trip to the british museum.

The purpose being to enlighten everyone and perhaps give different ideas to incorporate onto our characters.

Week nine

This is to be the final session on life drawing, and the final task is to draw another nude model like the previous week. However this week the model was a female different to last week.

Since these classes are very similar in that we are drawing life models there is not a lot in this week that i can write differently to the prior weeks, however i can say since this weeks model is a female and the previous weeks model was male, that it gives a very good example of how different the two's body structures are and different ways to draw each to present different aspects of their structure, for example men tend to have much broader shoulders than women.

I found this kind of visual information very useful as it will be able to help me in the future, when i next draw a male or female character, as i will know how to properly present the character making them look more masculine of feminine depending what i want.

Week eight

This is the second session based on life drawing, however in this session we move onto drawing an unclothed model.

This week were to draw an almost fully nude male model (almost fully nude as he was still in underwear)
Similar to the previous week the model took various poses and i was given the task to draw them, using the techniques i had learnt over the past weeks, as detailed and accurate as possible.

As stated in my week seven post, i believe the main thing i will be taking away from the life drawing sessions is the ability of being able to combine the techniques i have learnt to produce better work.

Week seven

This weeks session was the beginning of drawing life models starting with a clothed model. The purpose behind this session was to expand upon the previous sessions on structure where a skeleton was used as a model.
Throughout this session the model took a pose and it was my job, as well as the other students, to draw the model in their pose as detailed and accurate as possible, this was made easier by simply first using the techniques i had learnt in the previous structure classes, the dots and lines technique, and then continuing by drawing the rest of the body as an overlay using the lines as a guide then finishing by adding the detail of the clothing using techniques from the cloth drawing session and lastly shading using techniques from the light and shadow classes.

I believe the most important thing i will gain from this week, and the next two weeks of life drawing, is how to link all of the techniques i have learnt together to produce a better standard of work.

Week six

This week was the week of my first presentation for my character design based on me.
After thinking through various different character ideas to be based on myself i came to the conclusion to use the idea of, a robot samurai, my reasons for this were that i have a great passion for samurai history and i also love electronics and futuristic things.
 To link the character with myself i thought of various different things that would remind people of me, i came up with;

-My new era hat which i wear almost all the time and am known for it.
-Somehow incorporate my nickname that a lot of people know me by 'AcE' along with the ace of spades logo.
-Also perhaps try and incorporate hints of my personality in with the robot.

 After deciding on these different points i went off to create pieces of concept for this character and the piece that i ended up with was;

As you can see i have yet to incorporate my hat and i still need to finalize a design for the sword, however i managed to incorporate 'AcE' as a model number for the robot presented as 'Ac3' and the logo also.

This was the main piece for my presentation along with some other concepts, after presenting this to the other students i asked for feedback and any advice on progressing my character, which is the most important part of this session for me, as i received very useful feedback on my character and began right away on improving him using the various suggestions as guidelines.

Week five

This session was an expansion on the previous, the point behind this session however was to learn how to draw the structure of a human being in various poses i.e sitting down.
Therefore i began with the same technique i discovered previously, using both dots and also lines to create the structure focusing on the positioning and important areas of the skeleton.
Upon multiple attempts of drawing the skeleton in different sitting poses i moved onto trying to draw the actual skeleton in a pose instead of the lines i had been using, i found this easier than i would have if i had not found out about using lines to create the structure of the body.
I began the drawing of the skeleton by first using the dots and lines technique to allow me to get down his structure and once i was happy with that i moved onto overlaying the lines with the bones, and i must say i found it a lot easier than past attempts of trying to draw skeletons, i still have lots of improvements to make, however i am very happy that i have found this technique to help me.

since this weeks session is an expansion on the previous week i find that the most important thing i have learnt is still, the same as last week, the dots and lines technique to help create the structure of a human body.

Week Four

This weeks session was all based around learning about figurative drawing and learning about the structure of the human body using a model skeleton.
To begin with i was asked to do a rather odd seeming thing, to place dots down on my page of where the main parts of the skeletons body were, for example his head, hands, elbow etc.
After doing so i began drawing the dots from memory rather than using the skeleton as a guide, and moved onto drawing lines linked together o display these important parts, thus forming the structure of a body.
Once i had a few tries of drawing the structure of a body this way i found it to be a lot easier than trying to draw each part individually and ending up with off centre parts or other problems.

I found that using the dots and lines to create a starting structure for a human body, to be very useful and believe that it could also be useful for drawing the structure of other things like animals for example.

Week Three

In the third week of art after completing the process of setting up my easel properly i was faced with a chair atop a table with a large cloth draped over it.
The purpose behind this weeks session  was to be able to depict cloth in both form and light and shadow.
I began right away, drawing the cloth as detailed as possible using the new technique i had learnt from the week before.
After multiple attempts of drawing the cloth i moved onto presenting dark and light areas on the cloth, this also was made a lot easier by using the shading technique i had learnt the week prior.

The main thing i learnt from this weeks session is that when drawing cloth it is very important that you take the time to look how the creases flow and how it falls on the object it is on, if that is the case. This will help a lot in the future when trying to draw clothed characters or various other material objects.

Week Two

In this second week of Art I picked and collected an easel to use as my own, upon doing so I set it up and prepared for the lesson on light and shadow.
After setting up i was introduced to the same objects as last week, and told to draw them in what, at first, seemed to me to be an odd way. I was told to, rather than draw the objects using outlines, put shading down on the page first in the shape of the objects.
Upon shading all of the objects on my page, it was stressed that i should then study the objects to spot which areas are darker or lighter than others and present that on my image by either shading more to present the darker areas or using my eraser to rub away shading for lit areas.
Once I got the hang of it i found this to be a very useful and different process of drawing, mostly for very detailed shading.

The most important thing i learnt in this session is the technique of how to hold my pencil when drawing on an easel, like holding a painting brush, however i also find the shading technique to be really useful aswell.

First week

The first week for art was only a basic introduction to the subject explaining what we will be expected to do and what we will be facing in the near future.

Due to this fact we were only sitting in a small room with little room to move around in, however Jerry asked us to move all seats and tables aside as we were going to do some brief drawing exercises, he proceeded to place a table into the middle of the room and placed various objects on top, "draw these items, however when u draw them, draw only the outline, do not take your pencil off the page and use your opposite hand." The purpose of this exercise was to "wake up the other side of [our] brain", we also did a few other exercises using our 'weaker' hand such as drawing a border around our paper without taking our pencils off the page, a figure of eight and also multiple sketches, in certain ways, of the items in the middle of the room.

As pointed out this was only an introduction lesson and the 'odd' exercises were actually very handy as it slowly became easier to control my left hand, therefore i believe this would be my most important point of this lesson this week, that using my opposite hand can help work my brain allowing me to produce better work in the long run.
